But, you could put a BBK on if properly mounted and stuff is the jist of it isn’t it?

Putting a big brake kit on a miata is still a good idea in my opinion, especially if you do up the engine or swap it.

Is this a sarcastic post? They do realize that surface area is not proportional to brake force? Surface area has a lot to do with pad wear and heating, but def not a huge factor on overall torque.

Big brake kits increase radius, that is how they get more torque. They also have more thermal mass so can accept more kinetic energy before overheating. Lastly they have more surface area to dissipate that heat.

Anybody know what article they’re referring to? I can’t find it. I searched Jalopnik for “brembo” “sentra” “miata”, and the only thing that comes up is a Best of Oppo post. My google-fu is turning up nothing either.

Also, what’s this about “centering rotors”, and how does it affect wheel bearings?

I think the problems is that the Sentra is front wheel drive. Thus it’s braking power is going to be proportioned more to the front than a Miata needs. With a big brake kit, I’m assuming they’d proportion it the same.

No clue on the article, but the poster’s credentials certainly check out. Way above my pay grade anyways...

I think the main idea is that with brakes, more force isn’t always better in terms of lap times. More that it’s important to MATCH the brakes to the chassis properly. But Idk, I’m no engineer

Don’t ask me! I know how to replace brakes and the bare minumum of how the system works together! The guy’s pretty knowledgeable though, he’s been helping some of the best racers in the Miata community for quite a while. There’s a link to the original thread in another comment if you’re interested

Oof, 51 pages...

I know it’s important for rotors to be centered, just as it’s important for wheels to be balanced. I guess that could affect the bearings... But I’m just not sure how one would install rotors off-center in the first place.

Yeah it’s a biggin. I’m unsure on the rotors too, unless maybe it’s just a matter of removing surface rust from the hubs..?

I would actually love to see an article on a sentra/miata brake swap. Strange it’s not coming up

I’m wondering if the change in piston area (and braking force through the system because of the brake changes) causes the rears to lock up first. It sounds like the rear calipers would need less relative force of fluid to operate, so the brake bias might shift heavily rearward without a bias adjuster. This is just my wild-ass guess, based on my memory and limited understanding of a similar consequence of big-brake upgrades on SCC’s Porject Silvia:

Maybe if the Sentra rotors had larger lug-holes, and a larger center bore than the Miata? Maybe then the rotor would hang down off-center during assembly...

If that’s the case then yeah that’d be a pretty awful “upgrade”.

Ok, I think I found it. Not the Jalopnik article (sounds like it was deleted ), but a pic of the brake swap.

It “fits”, but it’s really sloppy.

I found another of his comments where he talks about balancing the rotors between the hub bearings?

Kinja'd!!!

Tebonly thing that makes sense is that ya you have to match hub size to hub bore size. His hydraulic speak before that comment checks out. But I don’t quite get what he’s gettting after with the accell decell stuff. The g forces for accelerating or decelerating will be the same if the rates are equal, no? Idk this guy’s comments just rub me wrong.

It must have been shared over there.

Given his professional experience, I then hope he just went about it explaining it poorly. Surface area is a bad way to put it. Much more relavent would be the overall diameter and upsetting the brake balance. I’ll read through the rest of his post but in that post he def doesn’t connect the dots for the reader.

Nice find! No wonder I didn’t see it; didn’t think to check Oppo haha. Hm, 3.4k views and 14 comments... seems kinda low for a FP share. It might be an early version of the article that went live on Jalopnik.

balancing the rotors between the hub bearing

Yeah, I don’t know what to make of that. Almost sounds like inboard brakes, but that can’t be right. Maybe he just didn’t word it the way he should have. I had a hard time understanding his other comment, but it turns out that I just needed a visual aid.

I see the pic and ya that obviously wouldn’t be a good idea. I think my issue with this guy is he acts like he knows everything but doesn’t actually explain what someone should do. If it read, “make sure the hub bore of the brake disc matches the hub diameter” it would make more sense and be useful.

Ok dug a little deeper. This guy comes across as a a total douche. A lot of his statements have little context or hard data to back them up (which I suppose could be said for me too). Many of his posts start with shit like “this would take years to properly explain.” So that is pretty off-putting.

Having said that, he knows his stuff. He is spot on and in the post before the one you had, went into all of the brake balance stuff. I realize also he is talking about piston area and how it is all wrong for the car. Basically piston area ( not pad area I mistook when he said “caliper area”) has a hand in dictating your hydraulic advantage. This then dictates how hard you can squeeze the rotor. Basically Jalopnik messed up the brake balance becuase they could now squeeze so much harder on the front compared to the rear. So they would lock the fronts first and not take full advantage of the rear brakes. I see what he is saying, he is just really bad at explaining things.
